Historische Schlossweihnacht Oelsnitz, Vogtland

The historical Christmas event at the more than 750 years old castle attracts thousands of visitors every year. The Christmas experience as it might have been in former times is an adventure for the whole family. The visitors may not expect a Christmas market in the traditional sense, which is loud and colourful, but the focus is on reflectiveness and festiveness, and that is why the historical Christmas market is something special. The event is based on Christmas as it was during the Wilhelminian time in the late 19th century.

The visitors of the ancient castle complex can experience in detail the time of the 1880s and 1890s, which was characterized by industrialization, the empire and the upcoming middle-class. In addition to compulsory crafts such as spinning work and artist blacksmiths or turnery, brush manufacturers and leather tannery, an art nouveau big wheel and ceramic painting is offered. The visitors shall prepare themselves for the holidays in a quiet and contemplative atmosphere with stylish chandeliers perhaps acquiring some nice Christmas presents. The Christmas market is open daily from 11 o’clock. Many actions mainly aimed at children and families are free of charge. Much effort is put into hands-on activities and demonstration workshops. In this context the organizers also emphasize exceptional details, such as an event magazine based on the style of the 1890s, revolver duels and a cinetoscope. The venue can be easily reached by public transport. Visitor parking is available around the castle.
