Founded in 2013, Art Basel Hong Kong has become one of the world’s most influential fairs for modern and contemporary art. As part of the global Art Basel network, it brings the brand’s curatorial rigour, international reach and market expertise to the Asia-Pacific region. It represents not merely an art fair, but a benchmark of quality within the international art market.
Each year, the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre is transformed into a global meeting point for galleries, artists, collectors, curators, museum directors and institutional decision-makers. The fair is organised by MCH Group AG, a Swiss exhibition and events company with longstanding experience in the international art and trade fair sector. The move into Hong Kong was a strategic decision aimed at showcasing Asia’s dynamic art scene and strengthening its ties with Western markets.
The fair focuses on outstanding works of the 20th and 21st centuries. Leading international blue-chip galleries present works by established masters of modernism alongside significant contemporary artists. At the same time, emerging talent is given a dedicated platform, notably in the “Discoveries” sector, widely regarded as a launchpad for new careers and further highlighted by awards such as the MGM Discoveries Art Prize. Curated sections including “Insights”, which spotlights historical and contemporary art from the Asia-Pacific region, and “Encounters”, featuring large-scale installations often conceived specifically for the fair, broaden the programme.
The range of works on view spans painting, sculpture and drawing, as well as photography, film, video, and digital and media art. In addition, the fair addresses curatorial approaches, collecting strategies, institutional partnerships and art-market services. It operates not only as a marketplace but also as a forum for dialogue and knowledge exchange. Within the “Conversations” programme, international experts discuss pressing issues such as artificial intelligence in art, geopolitical shifts in the global art market, and broader cultural-historical themes.
The fair maintains a close relationship with Hong Kong, widely recognised as an international financial centre and a cultural gateway between East and West. Art Basel Hong Kong reinforces this position by drawing global attention to the local art scene while bringing international players to the region. Exhibitors are primarily drawn from the international gallery sector, complemented by museums, foundations and other cultural institutions. The professional audience consists largely of collectors, art advisers, museum representatives, curators, investors and senior figures from business and the creative industries.
In addition to Hong Kong, Art Basel stages fairs in Basel, Paris and Miami Beach. Together, these events form a globally connected portfolio of premier art fairs, each with a distinct geographical focus. The Hong Kong edition is widely regarded as the leading platform for the Asia-Pacific art market.
The venue, the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, occupies a prime waterfront location on Victoria Harbour in Wan Chai. It is easily accessible from Hong Kong International Airport and the city centre via the Airport Express, MTR, ferry or taxi. Its state-of-the-art infrastructure, striking skyline and vibrant cultural context make the setting itself part of the experience, underscoring Art Basel Hong Kong’s role as a pivotal hub in the global art world.
The first day is by invitation only, as it is a private event. The Art Basel will take place on 3 days from Friday, 27. March to Sunday, 29. March 2026 in Hong Kong.
