IFAT Africa is a major trade fair for environmental technologies and sustainable solutions, held biennially at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Johannesburg, South Africa. First launched in 2015, it is part of the global IFAT network, whose flagship event has been held in Munich since 1966. Additional editions take place in countries including India, Eurasia, Brazil, and China. The event is organized by Messe München GmbH, supported by its subsidiary Messe München South Africa (Pty) Ltd.
The exhibition is tailored specifically for professionals from industry, municipalities, and government, offering a platform for dialogue on current technologies and solution strategies within the African environmental sector. Key topics include sustainable water management, particularly water supply, treatment, and innovative wastewater and recycling solutions, complemented by modern pump and piping systems.
Another central focus is waste management, with technologies and processes for the collection, sorting, and recycling of waste taking center stage. Special attention is given to the development of an efficient circular economy, waste prevention strategies, and the optimization of landfill technologies.
IFAT Africa also showcases technologies for energy generation from waste, such as biogas and waste-to-energy solutions. In addition, the fair presents innovative approaches in renewable energy—especially solar-powered applications—designed to meet the specific needs of the African context. This is complemented by products and services for urban cleaning and smart solutions for sustainable urban development.
Air pollution control and noise reduction in cities are also prominent themes at the event. Exhibitors present state-of-the-art filtration technologies, emission control methods, and measures to reduce urban noise pollution.
A significant area of the fair is the digitalization of environmental technology. This includes smart water management systems and IoT-based solutions for efficient waste and resource management.
IFAT Africa is acutely attuned to the unique challenges of the African continent, such as rapid population growth, economic expansion, and limited natural resources. There is a particularly high demand for infrastructure development and improved water and waste management systems, especially in regions heavily affected by mining activity. By presenting cutting-edge technologies adapted to regional conditions, the trade fair promotes knowledge transfer and opens up a wealth of business opportunities. It directly connects international providers with local decision-makers, actively contributing to Africa’s sustainable development.
The IFAT Africa will take place on 3 days from Tuesday, 08. July to Thursday, 10. July 2025 in Johannesburg.
