The INTERMODELLBAU in Dortmund is the world's largest trade fair for model building and model sports. Since its founding in 1978, it has established itself as a leading event for model-building enthusiasts, manufacturers, and industry professionals. Every spring, the Westfalenhallen Dortmund transforms into a paradise for model-building fans from around the globe, offering the latest trends, cutting-edge technologies, and impressive demonstrations.
Model building requires precision and patience. Working with materials such as wood, plastic, metal, or cardboard, combined with the use of specialized tools and paints, makes this hobby incredibly diverse. Many model builders find it a meditative activity that demands intense concentration. Visitors are particularly fascinated by the combination of creativity, technology, and craftsmanship. Model building not only enhances technical understanding but also encourages individual creativity, offering virtually limitless possibilities.
INTERMODELLBAU caters to professionals, hobbyists, and families alike. Organized by Messe Dortmund GmbH, the event benefits from years of experience ensuring smooth operations. Over several days, hundreds of international exhibitors showcase a wide range of products and services covering all aspects of model building. The fair has long moved beyond traditional crafting—modern technologies such as 3D printing, digital control systems, and AI-driven models are opening up entirely new possibilities. Whether programmable model railways, FPV drone systems, or high-performance RC cars, technological advancements continue to fuel passion for the hobby.
At the heart of the exhibition are detailed models and technical innovations. The offerings span from classic railway models in various scales and remote-controlled RC cars and trucks to state-of-the-art 3D printing technology. The model aviation section features aircraft and helicopters showcased in spectacular indoor and outdoor demonstrations. Ship modelers present their miniature boats on specially designed water basins, while nostalgic steam models, complete with authentic locomotives and machinery, captivate audiences. Other key areas include functional model building with remote-controlled construction machines, military model building featuring historical and modern vehicles, and both paper and plastic model building, which exemplify craftsmanship at the highest level.
Beyond the exhibition, INTERMODELLBAU offers an interactive experience with numerous hands-on activities. Visitors can operate remote-controlled vehicles, test model railways, or participate in practical workshops. Competitions and live demonstrations bring the excitement of model building to life, fostering direct exchanges between manufacturers, experts, and hobbyists.
As an established platform within the model-building industry, INTERMODELLBAU not only introduces new products and technologies but also strengthens the community and promotes the next generation of model builders. More than just an exhibition, it is an annual highlight for everyone passionate about intricate replicas, innovative technology, and the creative world of model building.
