The Medieval Market in Stein am Rhein, an annual highlight in December, is a feast for the senses and a journey back in time. First held in 2010, the market has become one of the highlights of the Advent season.
Stein am Rhein, a picturesque small town west of Lake Constance, provides the perfect historical setting for this unique market. Located in the courtyard of the St. George's Monastery and under the shadow of the medieval Hohenklingen Castle, the market impressively combines history and tradition. The former Benedictine abbey of the monastery and the idyllically located St. George's Monastery on the banks of the Rhine form a breathtaking backdrop, giving the market a very special atmosphere.
The market extends over the monastery courtyard and into adjacent areas. Visitors can stroll through a variety of market stalls offering traditional crafts, medieval clothing and jewelry, as well as various culinary delights. A distinctive feature of the market is the authentic representation of medieval life. Here, one can watch craftsmen at work and delve into the art of blacksmithing, pottery, or weaving.
Visitors can expect an unforgettable experience with music, jesters, and knightly battles that bring the past to life. The atmosphere is infused with the scents of traditional delicacies such as roasted game, freshly baked bread, and sweet treats. Spicy mulled wine and other medieval beverages are offered, transporting visitors to another time.
