Model Building Days (MODELLBAUTAGE) Tulln an der Donau

MODELLBAUTAGE is a public exhibition dedicated to the diverse world of model building. It caters to experienced model makers and industry experts as well as newcomers, hobbyists and families. Over several days, the event showcases the many branches of model building and the technology behind them. It is held annually at Messe Tulln in Tulln an der Donau, Lower Austria, and is organised by Messe Wieselburg GmbH.

MODELLBAUTAGE covers a broad spectrum, from model railways, model aircraft, boats, functional and plastic models to RC cars and radio-controlled construction machinery. Model railways are a particular focus. Covering around 6,500 m², Austria’s largest model railway exhibition features layouts in a variety of gauges alongside products and new releases from manufacturers, specialist retailers and model railway clubs. The model aircraft section includes aeroplanes, gliders, jets, warbirds, helicopters and large-scale models. Flying displays, together with flight and driving simulators, give visitors the opportunity to experience the technology first-hand.

The functional model section focuses on technically sophisticated, fully operational models powered or controlled by RC, steam and pneumatic systems. One of the main attractions is a large-scale model construction site, where radio-controlled excavators, lorries and other construction machinery operate in realistic working conditions. RC modelling also features prominently, with off-road vehicles, buggies, crawlers, trial vehicles and drift cars demonstrated on dedicated activity areas such as the Buggy Fun Area, RC Crawler & Trial course and Drift Zone.

The marine modelling section features model ships, boats and submarines demonstrated in a harbour basin and a large water tank. The programme also includes traditional plastic scale modelling, workshops, specialist talks and a range of hands-on activities. Children and newcomers in particular can get involved through RC driving schools, model-building stations and simulators, providing an accessible introduction to the hobby and an opportunity to gain practical experience.

Exhibitors primarily represent the model-making, model railway, RC technology, electronics, accessories and component manufacturing sectors, as well as specialist model retailers. Clubs and model-making associations also showcase their projects and layouts. Products on display include complete models and kits, vehicles, model railways and accessories, radio-control equipment, motors and drive systems, electronic components, tools and construction materials. Specialist services and expert advice on building, operating and developing models are also available. Key visitor groups include model-making enthusiasts, collectors, technology enthusiasts, club members and hobbyists, as well as families and children looking to discover model building.

A defining feature of MODELLBAUTAGE is its combination of an extensive model exhibition with practical demonstrations and interactive areas. Rather than being displayed solely as static exhibits, many models are shown in realistic operation – on railway tracks, in the air, on RC courses, at model construction sites and on the water. Live demonstrations, activity areas, workshops and hands-on stations are therefore central to the event. This makes MODELLBAUTAGE both an important meeting place for Austria’s model-building community and an attractive destination for visitors from neighbouring countries.

Messe Tulln provides the event with a well-established Austrian exhibition venue offering extensive indoor and event space. Tulln is located west of Vienna and is easily accessible by both car and public transport.
