POTENTIALS OÖ Gmunden

POTENTIALS OÖ is a young yet pioneering art fair that has taken place biennially since its inception in 2024 at the elegant Toscana Congress Centre in Gmunden. The name “POTENTIALS OÖ” refers not only to the artistic potential of Upper Austria but also to a clear mission: to spotlight emerging, as-yet-unestablished artistic talent and to strengthen the region’s contemporary art scene. The fair is organised by the Association for the Organisation of POTENTIALS, which works closely with local art associations to lay a strong foundation for cultural diversity in the region.

Far from a conventional trade fair, POTENTIALS OÖ is a curated exhibition space dedicated entirely to contemporary visual art from Upper Austria. It showcases work by early-career artists whose originality, experimental approach, and local roots set them apart. More than just a platform for presentation, the fair acts as a catalyst for new artistic developments. Exhibitors are drawn primarily from the independent art scene – represented by local art associations, informal collectives, and young galleries focused on emerging artists.

A defining feature of the fair is its strong regional identity: both conceptually and organisationally, POTENTIALS OÖ is rooted in Upper Austria. It shines a light on creative practices developing outside the mainstream international art market, with a clear focus on the region’s cultural potential. Rather than consumer goods or standardised services, the fair presents exclusively artistic works and positions that invite collection, support, and reflection. At the same time, it creates space for dialogue, networking, and the realisation of new art initiatives.

A particular highlight is the active involvement of art associations: they not only contribute to the organisation but also help shape the curatorial programme. The audience primarily comprises artists, curators, collectors, art educators, and culturally engaged visitors seeking original works and fresh perspectives.

The venue, the Toscana Congress Centre in Gmunden, is a light-filled structure with expansive windows offering panoramic views of Lake Traunsee and the surrounding Salzkammergut mountains. Its lakeside location, just a stone’s throw from the historic Seeschloss Ort, lends the fair a distinctive atmosphere and makes it both architecturally and scenically a memorable experience. The centre is easily accessible – by public transport or car – and just minutes from Gmunden’s town centre.
