Since its founding in 2008, the Career Information Fair Ruhr (BIM) – “what’s up?” – has been one of the largest and most important career orientation events in the Ruhr region. Held annually, it is aimed at secondary school students who are facing the decision of whether to pursue vocational training, a university degree, or alternative paths such as internships or stays abroad. Organized by Bochumer Veranstaltungs-GmbH, the fair provides a platform that brings together young people, parents, teachers, companies, and universities. The venue is the Jahrhunderthalle Bochum, whose combination of historic architecture and modern infrastructure creates a unique setting for the event.
The focus of BIM is on practical and comprehensive career guidance. Visitors not only receive first-hand information but can also engage directly with companies, universities, and institutions. Numerous exhibitors from key industries in the Ruhr area – including healthcare, skilled trades, logistics, retail, services, IT, energy, utilities, and the public sector – present their training and study opportunities. This is complemented by the participation of well-known universities in the region, such as Ruhr University Bochum and Bochum University of Applied Sciences, which provide insights into degree programs, admission requirements, and student life.
A distinctive feature of the fair is its interactive approach. The career parcours allows students to try out different professions and discover their own talents, which can then be explored further in conversations with potential employers. Additional offers such as résumé checks, individual counseling sessions with the Federal Employment Agency and youth career services, or interview training workshops make BIM an effective springboard for future careers. Parents and teachers are also actively involved through lectures in the parents’ forum, educational materials, and special programs for school classes, ensuring comprehensive support for everyone engaged in the career decision-making process.
BIM combines a wide range of information with direct contact to employers and hands-on experiences, making it a unique concept. With its clear focus on the needs of young people, it provides guidance that goes far beyond a traditional information fair. The first day of the event is reserved for school classes and larger groups, while the second is open to all interested visitors. As such, the Career Information Fair Ruhr has established itself as an indispensable platform that not only answers the question “what’s up?” but also points out concrete pathways into the professional world.
The Ruhr Career Information Fair (BIM) – in Bochum took place on Wednesday, 10. September 2025.
