The Sustainable Material Expo Tokyo is Japan’s leading trade fair for sustainable materials and future-oriented substances. Held annually in autumn at the renowned Makuhari Messe exhibition center in Chiba, just outside the Tokyo metropolitan area, the event is organized by RX Japan Ltd., one of Asia’s most prominent trade fair organizers, known for delivering highly professional exhibitions with an international outlook.
More than just a showcase for innovative materials, the Expo serves as a strategic platform for innovation, knowledge exchange, and sustainable transformation across diverse industries. It connects thought leaders, developers, manufacturers, and decision-makers from sectors such as construction, packaging, fashion, electronics, and furniture design—united by a shared commitment to shaping a resource-efficient future.
The exhibition focuses on key topics such as biodegradable plastics, nature-based materials derived from cellulose, recycled resources aligned with circular economy principles, and materials aimed at reducing CO₂ emissions—evaluated through robust life cycle assessments (LCAs). Durable materials, eco-friendly packaging, additives, chemicals, and lightweight construction concepts also feature prominently. In addition, the Expo highlights forward-thinking approaches to tackling marine plastic waste and pollution—addressing one of today’s most pressing environmental challenges.
The exhibition content is tailored specifically to sustainable product solutions. Attendees gain insights into environmentally friendly building materials, energy-efficient insulation, recycled textile fibers, biodegradable packaging solutions, ethically produced fashion accessories, sustainable furniture concepts, low-emission paints, energy-optimized electronic devices, and systems for e-waste recovery and recycling.
A key feature of the Expo is its close integration of science, industry, and practical application. Expert lectures, research presentations, and international best-practice case studies make the event a valuable hub of knowledge. The program is further enriched by targeted networking opportunities and high-level panel discussions that provide fresh impetus for future developments.
Sustainable Material Expo Tokyo is part of the Highly-functional Material Week, a trade fair platform also held in Osaka (INTEX) and Nagoya. This format enables industry professionals from different regions of Japan and around the world to stay informed about the latest developments in material technologies and to foster interdisciplinary collaboration.
Exhibitors represent a wide range of industries—from materials science and mechanical engineering to the packaging, chemical, and textile sectors, as well as architecture, electrical engineering, and environmental technology. Key visitor groups include R&D professionals, sustainability officers, product designers, engineers, and decision-makers from procurement and production.
Makuhari Messe is considered one of Japan’s most advanced exhibition centers. With excellent infrastructure, international standards, and convenient public transport access, it is easily reached from both central Tokyo and Narita International Airport. Chiba itself offers a high quality of life and a strong focus on technology, education, and sustainability—making it the ideal setting for a trade fair dedicated to a greener future.
The Sustainable Material Expo Tokyo will take place on 3 days from Wednesday, 12. November to Friday, 14. November 2025 in Chiba.
