The Trier Crafts Market is one of the leading events for high-quality arts and crafts and traditional craftsmanship in Rhineland-Palatinate. Held annually in July, the event transforms Trier’s Viehmarktplatz, located in the heart of the city, into a vibrant open-air workshop. Around 80 carefully selected workshops and studios showcase their handcrafted creations.
The market is organised by Rügener Kleinkunstbühne pro Musis e.V., an association dedicated to promoting art, culture and traditional crafts.
Traditional and contemporary craftsmanship are at the heart of the Trier Crafts Market. Visitors have the rare opportunity not only to purchase handcrafted goods but also to watch many of them being made. Exhibits include ceramics and pottery, gold and silversmithing, woodturning, artistic metalwork, textile design, glassblowing, basket weaving, bell casting and candle making, alongside a wide range of other craft disciplines. The selection ranges from decorative pieces and high-quality functional items to bespoke works and one-of-a-kind creations.
Exhibitors primarily represent the fields of arts and crafts, design, traditional trades and creative industries. Many demonstrate their skills on site, offering fascinating insights into traditional techniques that are rarely seen today. As a result, the event combines exhibition, retail and live craft demonstrations in a highly engaging visitor experience.
The market attracts a broad audience, including private consumers, art and culture enthusiasts, collectors of handcrafted products, tourists and families who value quality, individuality and traditional production methods. It also draws professionals from the fields of art, design, interior architecture and the crafts sector, who attend to gain inspiration and establish new contacts.
One of the market’s defining features is the combination of outstanding craftsmanship and Trier’s historic setting. The event takes place on the Viehmarktplatz, just a short distance from the world-famous Porta Nigra, the city’s landmark monument and part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. This unique backdrop creates a distinctive atmosphere, linking traditional craftsmanship with the more than 2,000-year history of Germany’s oldest city. Visitors can also combine their visit with a stroll through the historic old town and its many Roman monuments.
The focus of the event is on showcasing exceptional handcrafted work while encouraging direct interaction between makers and visitors.
As a venue, the Viehmarktplatz benefits from its central location and excellent accessibility. Visitors can easily reach the market by public transport or make use of nearby parking facilities. Thanks to its excellent infrastructure and close proximity to Trier’s principal attractions, the Trier Crafts Market provides the ideal setting for a rewarding day out, bringing together traditional craftsmanship, culture and local history in a unique and memorable way.
This year the Trier Craftsman Market takes place on 2 days from Sat., 04.07.2026 to Sun., 05.07.2026 in Trier already for the forty-fourth time.
