The Ratzeburg Island Advent is a unique experience characterized by its diversity and idyllic atmosphere. Annually during Advent, several locations in the city are transformed into festive spots, inviting visitors to marvel and enjoy.
Candles and cookies are part of a festive Advent season – and for many people in Ratzeburg and the surrounding area, so is visiting the Cathedral Advent Bazaar. Traditionally held on the second weekend of Advent in the cloister of Ratzeburg Cathedral, this event has been a long-standing tradition for many years.
At the A. Paul Weber Museum, visitors can relax in a cozy café with homemade cakes and pastries, accompanied by the house specialty, Owl's Brew. On the upper floor, a small Christmas bazaar awaits, offering handicrafts and Christmas crafts.
The District Museum of the Duchy of Lauenburg, with its traditional exhibition featuring historical Christmas decorations and model trains, offers a journey back in time. Also on display are beautiful old Christmas greeting cards, Gablonz glass bead jewelry, glass tree decorations from Lauscha, and old tools used to shape Christmas balls.
In the Ratzeburg Youth Hostel, a small, cozy Advent market takes place. Various stalls in the foyer offer a variety of products, complemented by culinary delights such as fresh waffles and hot cocoa.
Every year on Saturday, the St. Petri Town Church holds the opening service for the Island Advent. The Petri Forum offers a varied children's program and creative Christmas crafting activities.
The marketplace forms the heart of the Advent market with a selection of sweet and savory foods. From warm Mutzen (a type of pastry) to crêpes, bratwurst, and punch, there is something for every taste. In addition, various types of honey, mustards, beeswax candles, and tealights, as well as numerous types of mead, are offered for sale. Hot mead is also served to warm up the visitors. Decorative and artistic wood crafts set the mood for Christmas and make great gift ideas.
Besides the Advent market, Ratzeburg is known for its picturesque location by the lake, rich history, and numerous attractions. Ratzeburg, a picturesque small town in Schleswig-Holstein, lies idyllically near the border with Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. It's not only the charming county town of the Duchy of Lauenburg but also a recognized health resort. What makes Ratzeburg unique is its enchanting old town, resting like a pearl in the middle of Lake Ratzeburg. This "island town" is connected to the mainland by just three dams, giving it a very special charm. To facilitate stress-free access for visitors, parking at "Am Wall," "Unter den Linden," or "Schlosswiese" is recommended.
In conclusion, the Advent market in Ratzeburg is not just a market, but a festival of community and joy, enriching the pre-Christmas season with a special touch. It offers a perfect opportunity to experience the festive season in one of the most beautiful cities in Northern Germany.
The Advent market takes place annually, and therefore for the twentieth time previsibly in December 2025 in Ratzeburg.
