The Apolda Festival of Lights is an annual Christmas market held during the Advent season, transforming the town square into a stunning sea of lights. The square is immersed in an extraordinary array of light and color, creating an enchanting and festive atmosphere. The market spans the entire square and features a wide range of attractions. Visitors can look forward to a colorful and varied program, including musical performances and activities for children, such as a visit from Santa Claus. Another highlight is the model train exhibition in the town hall, adding a fascinating element to the market scene.
Festively decorated stalls, run by numerous vendors, showcase regional and national products such as handicrafts, toys, and decorations for the Advent season. Culinary delights include sweet and savory treats like gingerbread and Thuringian sausage, along with fragrant mulled wine and roasted almonds, spreading their aroma across the square.
The market's organizer is the city administration of Apolda, which is also responsible for other cultural and social activities in the town.
Apolda, a town in eastern Germany in Thuringia, is known for its rich history and culture, dating back to the Middle Ages. In the 19th century, it became a significant center for the textile industry, especially for knitted and jersey fabrics, for which it is still known today. Apolda is also referred to as the "Bell City," having produced bells for centuries. The Dog Museum is dedicated to the history of dog breeding, for which Apolda is also famous, including the breeding of the German Doberman at the end of the 19th century. The St. Boniface City Church is a striking Gothic building and a vital part of the cityscape. Although only a few parts of the original castle remain, it is a historical landmark of the town. With its well-preserved buildings, Apolda's city center offers a glimpse into the architecture of past centuries.
The Apolda Festival of Lights is worth visiting not only for its unique light installations and diverse range of stalls and activities but also for its traditional delicacies and drinks that immerse visitors in the pre-Christmas mood. The market is easily accessible and provides visitors with an unforgettable experience in the historical and cultural setting of Apolda.
The Christmas market takes place annually, and therefore for the 26th time previsibly in December 2025 in Apolda.
