The Salzburg Fortress Advent, an annual Christmas market held at the Hohensalzburg Fortress, transforms the historic castle courtyard into a pre-Christmas wonderland. This market, taking place on all four Advent weekends from Friday to Sunday, offers a unique atmosphere shaped by the romantic lighting of over a hundred Moravian stars in the fortress alley.
The stalls spread out in the courtyard of the Hohensalzburg Fortress present a diverse selection of local crafts, original gift ideas, and traditional Salzburg delicacies. Particularly noteworthy is the range of regional treats and drinks, including mulled wine and culinary specialties, inviting visitors to linger and enjoy.
The market is organized by the Salzburg Castles & Palaces Management, which, in addition to organizing this special event, is also responsible for the maintenance and presentation of the historic fortress. The Fortress Advent is distinguished by its unique flair, arising from the combination of a traditional Christmas market and the impressive setting of the fortress.
Another highlight of the Fortress Advent is the extensive accompanying program, especially attractive for families. The Hödlmoser Studio offers a supervised children's program on all opening days, delighting with music, cookie baking, a reading corner, and Christmas crafts.
The Hohensalzburg Fortress itself, as one of the largest and best-preserved castles in Central Europe, also offers fascinating insights into history and architecture. The view from the fortress over the festively lit old town of Salzburg is another unforgettable experience.
In summary, the Salzburg Fortress Advent offers a unique blend of traditional Christmas market, cultural program, and historic ambiance, attracting visitors from near and far and delighting them anew each year.
