International Stamp Fair (Internationale Briefmarken-Messe) Essen

Canceled: 08. - 10. May 2025 | | International stamp fair

The International Stamp Fair in Essen, founded in 1976, is the oldest event of its kind in the world. It is organized by the trade fair agency Jan Billion and attracts philatelists and collectors from all over the world every spring. The collection of stamps, also known as philately, began shortly after the first issue of stamps. The world's first stamp, the "Penny Black," was issued in Great Britain in 1840. As early as the 1860s, there were reports of serious stamp collectors, and the hobby has since become increasingly popular.

The establishment of the first stamp collecting club in London in 1869 underlines the rapid spread and growing interest in this hobby. To this day, philately remains a widespread pastime and also has a significant economic aspect, as rare and valuable stamps are often traded for high sums. The so-called "Blue Mauritius" is one of the most famous and rarest stamps in the world. It was issued on the island of Mauritius in 1847 and is now a coveted collector's item. However, an even rarer stamp is the "One-Cent Magenta" from British Guiana, which was issued in 1856. Only one copy of this stamp is known, and it was last sold in 2014 for an incredible 9.5 million US dollars. The fair focuses not only on stamps but also on postmarks, postal history, and philatelic accessories, with an emphasis on rarities and special issues. Also exhibited are rarities and spectacular classic stamps, the value of which can reach into the multi-million range for collectors. The fair also offers a range of services, including expert evaluations, exchange markets, and lectures by industry experts. An annual highlight is the presentation of new stamps and commemorative stamps, which are often released during the fair. The event takes place at Messe Essen, a modern and well-equipped venue in the vibrant city of Essen. Every year, the fair attracts thousands of visitors who share their passion for philately. The International Stamp Fair Essen remains a fixed part of the philatelic calendar and an indispensable event for collectors and lovers of stamps.
