European Bamboo Expo Dortmund

The European Bamboo Expo is Europe’s first trade fair dedicated entirely to bamboo as a sustainable raw material and its future potential. Launched in 2023 by the organizer Weproductions, the event has since taken place annually at the centrally located Dietrich-Keuning-Haus (DKH) in Dortmund. This modern cultural and event center is well connected to public transport and offers ample parking for visitors arriving by car.

The expo targets both industry professionals and the general public, aiming to spotlight bamboo as an innovative material for the European construction, architecture, and materials sectors.

Under the central theme "How the European Construction, Design, and Materials Industry Can Harness the Potential of Bamboo for Local Markets", the European Bamboo Expo serves as an international platform for exchange and networking. Exhibitors from various countries showcase products, technologies, and innovations—ranging from construction materials and furniture to textile applications. The program is enriched by expert presentations from renowned international speakers, along with universities presenting the latest research on the ecological and economic potential of bamboo.

A particular focus is placed on environmental benefits: bamboo absorbs approximately 30% more CO₂ and produces about 30% more oxygen than comparable tree species. This makes it not only a climate-friendly resource but also valuable for restoring degraded land and promoting sustainable production practices. The social dimension is also explored—especially its potential to create jobs and support rural communities in developing countries.

A cultural highlight of the expo is the Friday evening music performance, where only bamboo instruments are used—an impressive demonstration of the material’s creative potential. The program is rounded out with hands-on workshops on both days, where participants learn from experienced experts how to build stable and sustainable structures using bamboo. These sessions offer valuable insights for both professionals and curious newcomers.

With its clear focus on sustainability, innovation, and international knowledge exchange, the European Bamboo Expo is more than just a trade fair.
