The organizer is bbg Business Consulting GmbH based in Bayreuth. Since its debut in 1995 in Bayreuth, this two-day specialist fair has been held annually since 1999, usually in October, at the Dortmund Exhibition Centre. DKM is a registered trademark that evolved from the term "coverage concept fair" (Deckungskonzeptmesse in German). Over time, the DKM has come to represent more than just a fair for coverage concepts. However, the abbreviation has been preserved as a standalone brand.

At the DKM, both global players and traditional companies, niche providers, and startups showcase their products and services. The event also serves as a networking and further education opportunity for the industry. Exhibitors at the DKM include companies from insurance, claims adjustment, investment, asset management, real estate, as well as banks and Fin-/InsurTechs.
