Leipzig Book Fair Leipzig

27. - 30. March 2025 | International book fair and reading festival, connecting readers, authors, publishers, and media

The Leipzig Book Fair is one of the most significant events in the book and media industry and serves as the most important spring gathering for publishers, authors, and literature enthusiasts. Since its first edition in 1632, it has evolved into a renowned trade and public fair with nationwide and European influence. It is organized annually by Leipziger Messe GmbH, one of Germany’s oldest trade fair organizers. The venue is the modern Leipzig Exhibition Center, which, with its architecturally impressive glass hall and spacious exhibition halls, provides ideal conditions for literary exchange and the presentation of innovations in the book industry.

As one of the oldest fairs of its kind, the Leipzig Book Fair is closely linked to the city’s history as a major hub of trade and culture. As early as the Middle Ages, Leipzig was an important trading center, benefiting from its strategic location along key trade routes. The book fair was officially established in 1632, though its roots go back even further: Leipzig had already become a leading center for book printing and trade in the 15th century.

A decisive factor in the fair’s growth was Johannes Gutenberg’s invention of the printing press in the 15th century. Leipzig quickly became one of the most important centers of the book trade in the Holy Roman Empire. The first book fair took place as part of the traditional Leipzig Fair, where publishers, printers, and booksellers presented and exchanged new publications.

The Leipzig Book Fair aims to bring books and literature into the public spotlight. It brings together the entire publishing world under one roof and offers a broad spectrum of topics—from fiction and non-fiction to children's and young adult literature, as well as academic and specialized publications. A particular focus is placed on supporting emerging authors and fostering connections between publishers, authors, and readers. Additionally, the fair stands out for its international orientation, serving as a platform for intercultural exchange.

One of the fair’s most outstanding features is the accompanying reading festival, “Leipzig liest” ("Leipzig Reads"), considered the largest literary festival in Europe. Across numerous venues throughout the city—including bookstores, cultural institutions, and cafés—readings, discussions, and author appearances bring literature directly to the people. Furthermore, since 2014, the fair has hosted the Manga-Comic-Con, which has established itself as a key event for manga, comics, and cosplay, particularly appealing to a younger audience.

Another highlight is the Leipzig Book Fair Prize, one of the most prestigious literary awards in the German-speaking world. It is awarded in the categories of fiction, non-fiction/essays, and translation, honoring outstanding new publications. In addition to these highlights, the fair offers a diverse program for both industry professionals and the general public, addressing current literary trends, discussing industry topics, and introducing fresh perspectives through annually changing themes.

With an almost 400-year history, the Leipzig Book Fair is one of the few fairs with such a long-standing tradition. Its enduring presence underscores Leipzig’s significance as a city of books—an important cultural heritage that continues to be actively cultivated today.

On the whole the organisers welcomed on the 4 days of the fair, from 21. March to 24. March 2019, about 2547 exhibitors from 46 countries and 286000 visitors on the Leipzig Book Fair in Leipzig.
